Honoring Traditions While Design for the Future of Golf Clubhouses

The power of observation is transformative.

In golf, it sharpens strategy—helping players read the course, adapt to changing conditions, and recognize patterns that refine their game. In design, it reveals the unspoken rhythms of a space, guiding solutions that feel both natural and inevitable. At Priddis Greens, we looked beyond the clubhouse itself to how members instinctively used the club. By studying these behaviors, we uncovered an organic solution—one that strengthens the club’s social fabric and ensures long-term relevance.

Through thoughtful modernization, we are enhancing the member experience while preserving the prestige and sense of community that define Priddis Greens, securing its place as one of Southern Alberta’s most sought-after golf clubs for years to come.

Golf is a ritual. The beauty of the game lies in its balance between time-honored traditions and personal interpretation.

The evolution of clubhouses across North America reflects this duality—preserving legacy while adapting to the changing needs of members.

Set against the breathtaking Foothills of the Rockies, Priddis Greens is one of Southern Alberta’s most sought-after private clubs, known for its commitment to excellence in both golf and social experiences. But, as we observed, its existing clubhouse no longer served its members. Traditionalists sought to preserve the past; progressive voices called for change. The club needed a forward-thinking solution that would honor both perspectives.

As humans, we will often adapt to dysfunctional spaces rather than demand change. What we observed at Priddis Greens was that members had already begun shaping their own solution. The rigid, oversized dining room—underutilized and uninspiring—gave way to something unexpected: a rented event tent. Over several seasons, its placement evolved until it was just right—ideally positioned near the practice greens, parking lot, and halfway house, with unobstructed views of the landscape.

So rather than impose a new vision, we leaned into what was already working. Inspired by member behavior, we designed The Nest—a permanent structure that preserves the tent’s spirit while elevating its function.

Pavilion-style with operable walls, it offers indoor-outdoor flexibility, integrating seamlessly with the landscape.

A pizza oven, communal tables, and a fireplace create a warm, inviting atmosphere that is a welcoming alternative for club members and events.

Despite its clear success, The Nest challenged conventional expectations of a clubhouse. Some members envisioned something more traditional. In response, we embarked on a master plan—rethinking the clubhouse for the future.

The shift is clear: single-use spaces are giving way to adaptable, revenue-generating environments that balance tradition with evolving member needs.

At its core, this project is about connection—between people, spaces, and the land.

Our approach to social sustainability ensures that what we design today will be just as relevant decades from now. For Priddis Greens, that means a collection of resort-style, multi-use environments that foster community, enhance the member experience, and secure the club’s legacy for generations to come.
